Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a chessboard, a checkered game board with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. Chess believed to have originated in India sometime before the 7th century. The game was derived from the Indian game chaturanga, which also the likely ancestor of the Eastern strategy games xiangqi, janggi, and shogi. Chess reached Europe by the 9th century, due to the Umayyad conquest of Hispania. The pieces assumed their current powers in Spain in the late 15th century.
On how to play the game there are a multitude of books but here are a couple of tips that are sometimes overlooked: while acquiring your opponent’s pieces the main objective and the path to winning, placing your pieces such that you threaten and have control over most of the board a sure way of achieving that. Acquiring your opponent’s pieces may be your aim, having control of the board vital in doing that.
The other tip is that once you have a lead, straight swops of pieces weakens your opponent more than it does you, but with caution! Before doing a swop, check that that you are not swopping a very well-placed piece of your own for a weakly positioned one of your opponent.
Have fun with this mind absorbing game
