Our Shop
Salago store is a family run independent small business with a very long history in the historic town of Totnes, Devon. Starting in 1971 it truly was the original alternative shop of Totnes – now known globally as an alternative town.
We offer thousands of product lines in the shop, from fashion and footwear to toys and games. Find a selection on our website, adding new lines every week. If you are looking for something in particular but do not see it on our website, please contact us because we may can hopefully help you out.
Among our brands, we stock Shepherd sheepskin slippers and wool slippers by Haflinger and Wesenjak. Bags, purses and accessories and eco fashion brand Thought (previously named Braintree). Our toy section includes brands such as Ostheimer, Holztiger, Bigjigs and John Crane. We also stockists for Lyra Pencils and Stockmar art materials including watercolours, wax crayons and modelling beeswax.
Our History
Salago started trading as a retail store in June 1971. The initial product range consisted of leather goods, sheepskins and Indian and Greek fashion clothing, in fact, Salago was one of the first retailers in the South West of England to specialise in Oriental clothing.
It was a risk starting a shop which stocked these unusual types of products, at a time when Totnes was still a fairly traditional market town with very conventional shops. In fact, other local retailers known to have said “that shop will never last”.
In 1983 Salago store moved up the High Street to 51, a much larger building with two floors. This extra space allowed for a dramatic expansion in the product range. The lower floor space devoted to stocking a larger range of ladies fashions and accessories, footwear, leather goods and jewellery. The first floor became home to totally new product ranges, including toys, books, soft furnishings, games and many more. This expansion has led to Salago being one of the major retail stores in Totnes.
In 2022 Salago Left 51 to across the road in 56 high street to a lovely modern building. This was mainly due to the principle Partner Jim being 86 years of age needing something a little smaller and more manageable. Whilst maintaining the ethos and feel of the shop, the vast range reduced slightly.
New Chapter
The new chapter in 2026 is the very sad closure of the High Street premises in its 55th year of trading due to Jim now being 90 and having had a stroke, needing to slow down and focus on other passions like his sport of Fencing. Whilst Jim will still be involved, his sons will take on running the Salago Store business as an online venture with a pop-up shop for Christmas out at Greenslade Farm, Avonwick, TQ10 9EZ to coincide with the farm also selling Christmas Trees and their Free Range produce.
